1920 Census - African Americans, Steelton, Pennsylvania

Neighborhoods:  Street Index

By separating the census listings by street, we are able to search for any settlement patterns among Steelton's African American residents.  It also allows us to see the names of neighbors, which provides valuable information for genealogists and social historians.  The tables on these pages present an abbreviated version of the complete census data.  Several columns have been deleted for presentation purposes, and to keep the pages manageable in most browsers.  Some of the columns eliminated for this presentation are:  "Relation" (all are heads of households), "Education" (very little variance in data as no heads of households were recorded as having attended school within the year, and virtually all could read and write), and "Personal Description."  Any researcher interested in having a complete listing may contact the website editor.

Above is an example of how a listing for the Charles F. Howard family (yellow column) will appear on the Second Street page.   All families are listed in ascending order by street address.  This family lived at 221 Second Street (blue column).  This address was the 328th dwelling visited by the census taker, and the Howard family was the 377th family enumerated by that census taker.  Charles F. Howard rented this home, as indicated by the "R" under the column "Home Owned or Rented."  An "O" will appear if the home was owned by the residents.  Similarly, if the home was free of a mortgage, an "F" will appear in the next column, and if it was mortgaged, an "M" will appear.  States of birth are indicated for the head of the household, and for each of the parents of the head of the household.  The occupation will be listed next, followed by the place of employment.  As can be seen above, Charles F. Howard was a principal in the public schools.  Finally, whether the head of household was salaried (S), a wage earner (W) or self-employed (OA-own account) will be indicated.
