Wesley Church Pews

From Calobe Jackson, Jr., March 01, 2003
As a result of Stella Payne's TV commentary and interview of Pastor Thomas of Wesley Church and myself about the Underground Railroad on channel 21, Friday Evening, Hugh Woolridge phoned me. He says that some of the Wesley Church pews from the old church on Tanner's Alley now reside in the Masonic Home at 14th and Hanover. The pastor disposed of the pews a few years ago, in opposition to many members of the church, and some Masons took it upon themselves to save them. These pews go back to at least 1860 and it is believed that escaped slaves sat upon them.

We should be able to photograph them and perhaps place some in the museum that is to be constructed. No comment necessary !
