New Coalition to Study Enslavement in Northumberland and Union Counties, Pennsylvania

From Kate Hastings, November 11, 2003
I wanted to inform you of a new group that's been formed to try to determine the extent of slaveholding in Northumberland and Union Counties. It's a joint project of the Union County Historical Society in Lewisburg and the Northumberland County Historical Society in Sunbury, with input from the director of the Pennsylvania Museum and Historical Commission Priestley House site. It's simply called the "Slave Project" now.

This morning in Lewisburg, Dick Smith, Chuck Koons, Elaine Wintjen, Sam Alcorn, and Jeannette Lasansky from the Union County Historical Society met with Jane Richardson, Hope Kopf, and me from the Northumberland County Historical Society, along with Andrea Bashore of the Priestley House, to discuss a strategy for examining all wills, inventories, deeds, tax lists, association charters, manumissions, cemetery records, Civil War records, church records, and early newspapers from 1772 to 1865. Tasks were divided, and the next meeting was set for Jan. 22, 2004.

It's a good start.

Sincerely,
Kate Hastings
