Jane Mars Chester--Reply

From Barbara B. Barksdale, August 9, 2005 In reply to Calobe Jackson Jr.'s letter of August 5.

It sounds reasonable, but as you noted we will never know. She, like many others, could have had a great plan in place with the ABs and others to "hide and seek" when hearing of the catchers. Even with the freed Blacks, they were subject to being kidnapped and sold. Douglass and Jane were blessed that they were able to keep their freedom as well as not get killed. Being a Black with a visible MOUTH, was a sure way to get yourself lynched.
