Jazz at Lawson's Night Club

From Calobe Jackson, Jr., March 25, 2006

Thanks to Dr. Michael Barton, we had a great time at Morrison Gallery of the library at Penn State Harrisburg on March 21, 2006.  Jimmy Wood, Ron Waters and Jim Miller provided the jazz and I made a presentation about jazz in the old 7th Ward.  At left is a picture of Tiny Grimes at old Lawson's, located at 7th and Broad Streets, in 1952.  I remember how Grimes slurred his strumming while playing old Black Magic on his guitar.

Photo caption:  "Harrisburg, PA--Tiny Grimes and his Rocking Highlanders opened May 26 at Lawson's Nite Club, 1304 n. 7th st.  This top attraction, which comes to Lawson's after an engagement in which they were headlined at Earle Theatre in Philadelphia, features original versions of such numbers as: Rocking the Blues Away, Rock the House, Frankie and Johnnie, Black Magic, Riverside Jump and Annie Laurie.  This five piece combo regaled in real Scottish kilts is one of the nation's top entertainment outfits."
