This summer, local Boy Scout Patrick Erb chose to build a split-rail fence around portions of Midland Cemetery to help qualify him to be an Eagle Scout. Patrick Erb is a Boy Scout Eagle rank candidate from Troop 74, Hummelstown.

This project is a much needed improvement to the cemetery, as the old rough-cut timber fence was falling down in places from age and decay.

Pictured at left with him are members of his troop: Andrew Reichel, Greg Reichel, his father Dave Erb, Barbara Barksdale, president of Friends of Midland Cemetery, and Patrick Erb.

Jon Reichel, committee member of Troop 74 and formerly the Scoutmaster, is the photographer.  Swatara Township (Mr. Paul Cornell, administrator) provided the money to purchase the fence materials and rent the post hole digger.  Jon sent the pics to Laura Erb, Patrick's mother, and gave his permission for their printing on the Afrolumens Project website.  (Correspondence, Laura Erb to Barbara Barksdale, 3 August 2006)

Patrick provided the following summary of his project for the Afrolumens Project:

My Eagle Project was the construction of a fence along Kelker Road at Historic Midland Cemetery. It is a split rail fence. It looks very nice and I think it brings a nice rustic border to Midland Cemetery along Kelker Rd.

I am giving back to the township of Swatara by constructing a fence on their only historic site. I am giving back to the community [by providing] a lasting improvement that Midland Cemetery can only benefit from. This fencing is a blockade to prevent people from driving onto cemetery grounds and damaging the property. Also, it gives a clean rustic look to the already wonderful cemetery.

I got lots of help from the troop and help from some others friends. Thanks to all who helped.

I completed the following tasks: Dig holes, erect posts, set-up rails – install fencing, and make gates.

Another view of the work crew.  This picture was taken on Saturday, July 1, 2006, when most of the fence was built.

The Friends of Midland organization is very proud of its new fence and extends sincere thanks to Patrick Erb and his friends and family for all of their efforts toward making this project a success.
