Noted African American actress, playwright, activist and writer Ruby Dee was born in 1924 in Cleveland, but grew up in Harlem.  She acted in Broadway and films, and is famous for her portrayal of Ruth Younger in Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun."

With her late husband Ossie Davis, Dee has been politically active and an unflagging supporter of civil rights.  She has been a close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X.  She is a member of CORE, NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
