Dear Parade Participant;

On May 24th, 2003, the Friends of Midland will be celebrating our tenth year as the restorers and preservationist of the historic Midland Cemetery. We invite you to join us in this celebration by being a part of our encampment, parade and ceremony. We will be parading from Second and Adams Streets in Steelton to Midland Cemetery at Kelker Street and Cole Alley. Soon after the parade, a ceremony will be held, approximately 1pm, honoring the veterans that are laid to rest at Midland.

Midland Cemetery was started circa 1795 for people of color. Those laid to rest were slaves, United States Colored Troops that served in the Civil War, Buffalo Soldiers from the Western Campaign, members of World War I & II and other skirmishes. In addition, we will pay tribute to those who started the Hygienic School for Colored children, members of various churches and community organizations that helped to create the foundation of our society as we are blessed to be reaping the rewards of their efforts.

The schedule is as follows:
10:30 am - line up beginning at Adams Street
11:30am - procession route Second Street to Mohn Street and completed at Midland Cemetery (route is less than a mile.)

Each group will be given a certificate of recognition following the Memorial service and their information placed in our souvenir booklet. Please fill out the attached form giving us the information about your group.

Please return by May 10, 2003. For more information contact us at 717-939-0242 or 717-939-3985 or email at [email protected] or snail mail: Friends of Midland, PO Box 7442, Steelton, PA. 17113-0442.

Hoping to see you there,

Barbara Barksdale,
President
