Historical Slavery Advertisements

1798 advertisement for a 13 year-old Negro boy.Dauphin County Advertisement For a 13-Year-Old Slave

Oracle of Dauphin, 8 August, 1798; page 4.
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Text of the Advertisement

"For Sale, AN active Negro Boy, a Servant till twenty eight; he is now thirteen years old. Enquire of the Printer.  July 11."

Notes

This is a brief slave advertisement. The slaveholder gives few descriptive details other than the child's age and the notation that he is "active", which is meant to imply that the child is a hard worker. The slaveholder also wishes to remain anonymous by having any interested buyers go through the printer.

Born in 1785, if the child's age is correct, this boy will be held in bondage until 1813 unless manumitted earlier.
