Adams County--Advertisement For
"Colored Girl" Adams Sentinel, 27 January 1830, page 3.
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania |
Text
Text of the advertisement in the image above:
THE TIME OF A COLORED GIRL,
WHO has four years to serve, will be disposed of. Assurances can be given
that she is strictly honest.--.
Inquire of the PRINTER.
Notes
The advertisement is for the "time" of a slave,
indicating that she is a term slave, or one held to a term of years rather than
for life. She is most likely to be manumitted at the age of 28, the
standard age set by law in 1780, which would make her twenty-four years old.
Her year of birth, then, would have been about 1806, and she could expect to be
freed in 1834.
