Slave Notes: This is possibly the un-named male Negro slave enumerated in the 1800 tax census, born in 1764.

Ned ran away in 1796. Bausman advertised for his return. Text of runaway ad: "FIVE DOLLARS REWARD. RAN away from the subscriber in the borough of Lancaster, on Sunday the 11th instant, a Negro man, named Ned, thick set, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, large feet, very apt to laugh when spoken to, and appears foolish--stutters considerably, --had on, when he went away, a snuff coloured coat, with a red cape, a nankeen jacket, half worn, home-made ribbed breeches, a pair of white cotton stockings, fine shirt, shoes half worn, and a round wool hat. Whoever secures the said Negro, so that his master may get him again, shall receive the above reward, with reasonable charges, if brought home.
      JOHN BAUSMAN. Sept. 16"

Ned ran away again the next year: "8 Dollars Reward. RAN AWAY from the subscriber, living in the borough of Lancaster, on the 1st inst. a Negro, named Ned; he is 30 odd years old, about 5 feet 6 inches high, pretty well-set; stammers when he is speaking, is remarkable for laughing much, and has very large feet. He had on and took with him, a snuff-coulored coatee with red facing, a new high-crowned wool hat, a corduroy and nankeen waistcoat, 3 pair of trowsers, the one of nankeen, and the two others of blue striped linen; 2 shirts, the one fine, with ruffles, and the other of coarse linen; besides half-worn shoes of calf-skin. Whoever takes him up within 10 miles of Lancaster, shall have 5 Dollars reward; and if taken up more than 20 miles from said place, the above reward of 8 Dollars will be given with compensation for reasonable expenses, provided the owner can get him again.

A male Negro slave, of about Ned's age was returned as belonging to John Bausman in the 1800 Septennial Census, which would indicate that Ned was captured after his second attempt to run away, in 1797.

If she was freed before the birth of her daughter, why was the daughter held to bondage?

      "FIVE POUNDS Reward.
RAN away from the subscriber, living in Salisbury township, Lancaster county, on the 12th of June last, a Mulatto slave, named BARNEY, about twenty-six years of age, five feet ten or eleven inches high, of a very strong make, has a large scar over his right eye, and shews his teeth much when he laughs, he can read and write, he understands all kinds of farmer business, and can play the fiddle; had on, and took with him, a fustian coat and jacket, a striped ditto, a pair of blue and white striped cotton trowsers, a pair of tow ditto, a pair of white cotton stockings, calf-skin pumps, with large plated buckles, a fine shirt, a red silk handkerchief, and a wool hat almost new; he is an artful fellow, and perhaps has a pass; it is likely he will change his name and his clothes, and try to pass for a freeman. Any person apprehending and securing said runaway, so that his master may have him again, shall receive the above reward, and, if brought home, reasonable charges, paid by ROBERT BUYERS.
