ORGANIZATION IN NEW YORK STATE
Paul Stewart writes to inform me that a meeting was held at the Harriet
Tubman Historic Site in Auburn, New York, in May, to plan for a conference
to be held in early October 2004 on the Underground Railroad in New York
State and "education, preservation, and economic development in relation to
the UGR story and communities. The planning group also decided to form
itself as the "New York Freedom Trail Coalition." A follow-up meeting is
expected to be held in the Peekskill area on July 26, 2003. For more
information, contact Paul Stewart by e-mail [email protected]
or send
mail to him at Underground Railroad History Project, Box 10851, Albany
BLACK HISTORY CONFERENCE IN PENNSYLVANIA, 2004
Chris Catalfamo ([email protected]) sent information
on next year's
Pennsylvania State Black History Conference which will be held in Indiana,
Pennsylvania, April 23-25, 2004. Possible themes include the 50th
anniversary of Brown vs. the Board of Education, and the Underground Railroad.
Dr. Catalfamo writes that the conference will include an Underground
Railroad component "and I would suggest we also bring in John Brown since
Indiana has one of his men, Absalom (Albert) Hazlett and we also had a
Pennsylvania-Kansas Liberty Committee out of the Plumville Baptist Church.
It would also be fitting to do the constitutionality of slavery and the
Fugitive Slave Laws because of the Mitchell case and the succession of
Anti-Kidnapping Laws in Pennsylvania."
