URR NEWS: PROGRAM AT THURMONT, MARYLAND, SATURDAY, JULY 12, 2003 | CONFERENCE AT GREENWICH, NEW YORK, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY, AUGUST 9-10, 2003

URR Program at Thurmont, Maryland, Saturday, July 12, 2003

Thanks to Cheryl LaRoche for alerting me to this program. The following information is taken from a press release, slightly condensed.

The National Park Service and Catoctin Mountain Park will sponsor a campfire program, presented by University of Maryland scholar Max Grivno, at Cunningham Falls State Park, Thurmont, Maryland, at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 12, 2003. The program, based on information gained from Mr. Grivno's research on fugitive slaves and slavery in Northern Maryland, has been made possible by a grant from the National Park Service's National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program.

The Catoctin Furnace, built by Thomas Johnson and his brother Baker in 1776, utilized a work force consisting of slaves, free blacks and white laborers. The National Park Service included Catoctin Furnace in the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program because it was a place where enslaved people showed resistance to their plight. Runaway slave advertisements published by the furnace owners in the late 18th century document the resistance. Mr. Grivno will share his findings about slavery in Frederick County, Maryland, and slaves who escaped, during a program to be held at the Cunningham Falls State Park William Houck Area Amphitheater at 7:30 pm, Saturday, July 12, 2003.

For more information on the July 12 campfire program, contact Cunningham Falls State Park at 301-271-7574. More information on African-American history in northern Frederick County is on display at the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center through the end of September 2003. An illustrated program on the African-American Influence will be presented as part of the "Catoctin Roots" series in July. Call the Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center at 301-663-9388 for dates and times.

The park Visitor Center, located on State Route 77 three miles west of Thurmont, Maryland is open daily from 10:00 am until 4:30 pm, and from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, visit Catoctin Mountain Park Visitor Center online at http://www.nps.gov/cato or by phone at 301-663-9388 or contact Debra Mills at [email protected].
