URR NEWS: TUBMAN CELEBRATION IN NYC, MARCH 21, 2004 | ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON BLACK HISTORY IN PENNSYLVANIA, APRIL 15-17, 2004

CELEBRATING HARRIET TUBMAN, NYC, SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 2004

The Black Women's Leadership Caucus and the National Park Service Harriet Tubman Special Resource Study are sponsoring an event, "Celebrating Harriet Tubman Through History and the Arts" at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 135th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard, Harlem, New York City, on Sunday, March 21, 2004, 2:00 to 5:00 PM. Participants include Gail Lumet Buckley, author of American Patriot, Kate Clifford Larson, author of Bound for the Promised Land, Harriet Tubman, Beverly Lowry, James McGowan, and Nkeiru Okoye.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON BLACK HISTORY IN PENNSYLVANIA, INDIANA, PENNSYLVANIA, APRIL 15-17, 2004

The 27th annual Conference on Black History in Pennsylvania, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, will be held this year in Indiana, Pennsylvania, with the theme of "Fifty Years after Brown vs. the Board of Education." In addition to theme related presentations, the sessions on Saturday will include "African Americans in Indiana County" and "Pennsylvania and the Network to Freedom." On Saturday afternoon, there will be a historical marker dedication in Blairsville, commemorating the rescue of a fugitive slave named Newton in April 1858.
