HERITAGE NEW YORK - Underground Railroad Heritage Trail Grants
Applications are now available for the Underground Railroad Heritage Trail
Grant Program. This grant program will help to preserve, interpret and
commemorate the important history of the Underground Railroad in New York
State and create high quality tourist destinations. The Underground
Railroad Heritage Trail will consist of a network of designated historic
sites, plus regional and local interpretive centers to tell the story in
areas with few publicly accessible sites. Historic sites interested in
participating in the grant program must first be designated an Underground
Railroad Heritage Trail site by Heritage New York. Designation applications
are also available on our web-site or by contacting Heritage New York.
To accomplish this task, Governor Pataki has established a $1.4 million
grant program that will feature three major components:
- Funding interpretive signage and/or exhibits for all designated UGRR
Heritage Trail sites to ensure a quality presentation of the compelling
UGRR story.
- Awarding site improvement grants to these sites to enhance the visitor
experience.
- Awarding interpretive exhibit grants to establish Regional and Local
Interpretive Centers at visitor-ready facilities in areas that have few or
no designated sites to tell the story.
There are two applications. One application is for site improvements at
designated historic sites on the UGRR Heritage Trail. The other application
is for exhibit funds to enable a visitor-ready facility to become a
Regional or Local Interpretive Center. Both applications can be requested
from Heritage NY at (518) 473-8591 or by email at
[email protected] Applications are also available for download at
Heritage New York's web site: www.HeritageNY.gov.
We encourage eligible applicants to attend these pre-application workshops.
Please note that private owners are not eligible for this grant program.
