FAIR HILL BURIAL GROUND (PHILADELPHIA) CLEANUP DATES, APRIL 9, JULY 9 AND OCTOBER 8, 2005

Fair Hill Burial Ground in Philadelphia is the burial site of a number of well known abolitionists in Philadelphia, including James and Lucretia Mott, and Robert Purvis. In recent years, care for the Fair Hill has become a community project, celebrating not only the past but the revitalization of the neighborhood. Several times a year, volunteers from the Fair Hill Burial Ground Corporation and the community work together to clean the site. For information, check their website:

ANNUAL CONFERENCE ON BLACK HISTORY IN PENNSYLVANIA, PHILADELPHIA, APRIL 20-23, 2005

The 28th Annual Conference on Black History in Pennsylvania, sponsored by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission will be held in Philadelphia, April 20-23, 2005. Several sessions and tours relate specifically to the Underground Railroad, including a bus tour of Philadelphia led by Charles Blockson, and walking tours at Independence National Historical Park, a session on the National Park Service Network to Freedom Program, with Sheri Jackson, Joseph Becton and Najah Palm, and sessions on preservation of Underground Railroad and Black history, on resources and research strategies. A FIRESIDE LECTURE WITH NANCY WEBSTER ON THE HISTORY OF THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD IN DELAWARE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, THURSDAY, APRIL 14, 2005, 7:30 PM

Nancy Webster is a prominent Quaker historian who has lectured and written extensively about the Underground Railroad in Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

The lecture will be given at 7:30 at the Peace Center of Delaware County (Springfield Friends Meeting House), 1001 Old Sproul Road, Springfield, Delaware County, Pennsylvania.

The lecture is a prelude to the Third Annual Delaware County Peace Festival to be held on Saturday, May 14th, with the theme of "Celebrating the Underground Railroad." For more information on the lecture and festival, call 610-328-2424.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD GATHERING FOR FAIRFAX AND PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTIES, VIRGINIA, APRIL 27, 2005

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom, National Park Service, will sponsor an Underground Railroad Gathering for Fairfax and Prince William Counties on April 27, from 1-4 pm, at the Gum Springs Historical Society in Fairfax County. The objective is to cooperate on identification of Underground Railroad resources and their documentation, interpretation, and preservation. The meeting is free and open to the public.
