BOUND FOR CANAAN: FERGUS BORDEWICH AT THE CHESTER COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY, WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13, 2005

April 13, 2005; 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

The Underground Railroad and the War for the Soul of America Chester County's history is closely tied to the story of the Underground Railroad, and acclaimed author Fergus Bordewich will present that story in all its complexity and vibrant detail. His new book Bound for Canaan is a meticulously researched and dramatically told account of this pivotal chapter in our history. Bordewich, who has written for the New York Times, Smithsonian, Atlantic Monthly, and other prestigious publications, has found the real-life stories like one woman's escape across an icy river that fired antislavery forces and inspired popular fiction. He shows how those individual anecdotes are part of the larger story of the abolition movement, Civil War, and race relations story that continues to this day. This program is free.
