The Summer 2005 issue of the National Park Service's Network to Freedom Newsletter is available on line. Articles include a memorial to Dr. Barbara Woods, an account of Virginia abolitionist Moncure D. Conway, the Georgetown Historic District in Indiana, "The Pearl" (a failed 1848 attempt by freedom seekers to escape Washington, DC, by water), an exhibit on freedom seekers at the Newton (Massachusetts) History Museum, the Black History Committee of Loudoun County, Virginia; and announcements of upcoming events. BOOKTALKS IN CHESTER COUNTY, PA, OCTOBER 13 AND 26, 2005

Christopher Densmore will discuss Robert Smedley's classic, and recently reprinted, History of the Underground Railroad in Chester and the Neighboring Counties of Pennsylvania at the Chester County Book and Music Company, 975 Paoli Pike, West Goshen Center, West Chester, PA (610-696-1661) on Thursday, October 13, 2005, at 7:30 pm and at the Southeastern Chester County Historical Society, meeting at Kennett Friends Meeting, PA Route 82 and Sickles Street, Kennett Square, PA, on Wednesday, October 26, 2005, at 7:30 pm.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD GATHERING AT GETTYSBURG, PA, SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2005

An Underground Railroad Gathering in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania will be held at Gettysburg College, 300 North Washington Street, Gettysburg, PA 17327, from 9 am to 2:30 pm on Saturday, October 22, 2005.

This event is sponsored by the NPS National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom program, Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission, Adams County Historical Society, Thaddeus Stevens Society, Menallen Friends Meeting, and Gettysburg Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

Participants include Scott Hancock, Gettysburg College, Sheri Jackson, Network to Freedom, Karen James, PA Underground Railroad Network, with book signings by Allen Guelzo, Gettysburg College, author of Lincoln's Emancipation: The End of Slavery in America and Debra McCauslin, Menallen Friends Meeting, "Reconstructing the Past: Puzzle of a Lost Community."
