bronwen c. souders'
index of samuel m. janney's Memoirs
sequential index

index description

Bronwen Souders and her husband John have written numerous books about the history of Waterford, Virginia, a 1733 village near their home in Loudoun County.  In 2005 the Souders presented the Thomas Balch Library in Leesburg with a bound collection of records of runaway slaves, as recorded by advertisements in The Genius of Liberty, a 19th century newspaper, covering the years 1817 to 1843 (click here to access those records).

Samuel McPherson Janney (1801-1880), was a Quaker essayist, lecturer and lobbyist for religious and anti-slavery causes.  His extensive travels throughout the northeast enabled him to come in contact with many others in the anti-slavery movement, during its most active and volatile period.  Bronwen Souders has indexed his memoirs for her own use, and graciously shares the index as a tool for researchers in the anti-slavery and Underground Railroad field of study.  Two versions of the index are available: one sequential (below), listing all of the sites and people Janney writes about, in order of appearance, and a second index, which is strictly alphabetical.

An electronic version of S.M. Janney's book is available online from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, at: http://docsouth.unc.edu/fpn/janney/janney.html  The electronic version has retained the original page numbers, making it a good match for the index below.  The link above will open the book in a new window, making it easy to use the index alongside of the original text.
