Third Street Corridor

Modern view of Third Street in Harrisburg, from Mulberry Street looking toward Market Street and the pedestrian overpass at Strawberry Square.

Mulberry Street to Walnut Street, Harrisburg, PA

Third Street was a valuable link for Harrisburg's African American residents, as it directly linked the Judy's Town and Strawberry Alley neighborhoods, and terminated one block from the intersection with Tanner's Alley.

It was a dirt street, located far enough from the development along Front, Second, and Market streets, to remain relatively quiet. It was also short; a person in a hurry could traverse the distance from Judy's Town to the African American boarding houses in Strawberry Alley in less than five minutes, and reach the entrance to Tanner's Alley, at Walnut Street, in another two minutes.
