2003 MailMemories of Joe TolliverFrom Calobe Jackson, Jr., August 5, 2003 Joe Tolliver was a great friend of my family. I think he went to school with my mother. Joe and I went to the district and state track meet for many years. I worked with him at the Harrisburg Post office and truly miss him. He was a graduate of Harrisburg Tech, I think in the class of 1925 or 1926. I have a copy of his yearbook. One of Joe's nieces ran track, perhaps it was you or your mother Avis. Avis seems to ring a bell in my memory. As you may know Rev. Tolliver is buried in Lincoln Cemetery and has a beautiful tombstone from Zion Baptist Church. Colonel Strother's wife caught a cold at the dedication of Zion Baptist, developed pneumonia and died a few weeks later in 1895. Strothers, a city policeman at the time was owner of the Harrisburg Giants, famous baseball team of the 1920's. This website has united me with many former Harrisburgers. I have started a Harrisburg History Ministry, with many voices from the past asking to be heard. Keep in touch. |
