Blessings of the season

From Marian Cannon Dornell, December 19, 2003
Dear George, Sheila, Barbara, Weldie, and Calobe,
Marian Dornell, here, needing to acknowledge to you how important this website has been to me this year. Afrolumens has brought me friendship with all of you. Afrolumens has brought me information that connects directly to my heart about all those heroic people who've lived in past centuries and on whose shoulders I stand to try to help make the world a decent and safe place for our children. Afrolumens has brought me peace of mind because that little girl who grew up on the banks of the Susquehanna River who heard that her life was insignificant because of the color of her skin has learned that she has a past in which she can share and be proud. And finally, Afrolumens has given me the courage to take on a poetry project that will help give voice to the all those people, specifically women of color from our collective past, whose exemplary lives showed that physical courage and the belief in something larger than themselves makes a tremendous difference in the way people can choose to live meaningful and productive lives.

In other words, George, Sheila, Barbara, Weldie, and Calobe I want to thank each of you for creating Community out of what had been a desert of sad memory for me. It has changed the nature of my relationship with Harrisburg and is the final step I needed to make in being able to forgive the injustices, large and small, that were part of growing up in that town. I truly embrace my past and take pride in having been part of that community as I see that not all of that experience has been negative. You have made a difference and I thank you. Merry Christmas and a healthy, meaningful New Year.

Sincerely,
Marian
