George Chester and Garrison's Liberator

From Tim Niesen, 11 January 2009

George,
Your following statement is a myth: "I love walking through the streets of Harrisburg and imagining the likes of George Chester inviting local abolitionists into his oyster house just off Market Street to read his letter to the editor in the latest issue of The Liberator..." There are no such letters in the Liberator! George Chester, indeed, wrote many letters to Garrison; as indicated his letters received notice in the column, but none of them were published. I have read this publication from its start to its end. Chester's oyster house did sell this abolitionist publication, however, as George Chester is listed as its agent in Harrisburg.

Tim Niesen

P. S. I am glad to see your site restored. To see myself at Chester's grave once again is a joy.

Reply from the editor: Tim, you are absolutely correct. I thank you for that correction. I was indeed thinking about the notice that George Chester s letter was received, and got carried away in my prose. I'm going to correct that sentence right away. Thanks for keeping me accurate and thanks for your words of support. It is good to be back on the web.
