WAS committed to the Jail of Bedford county, A NEGRO MAN, who calls himself Thomas Watkins, who says he is a freeman, and was kidnapped by a Kentucky trader, from whom he ran away. The owner of said negro, if he has any, is desired to come within four weeks from this date, otherwise he will be discharged.
HENRY SIDES, Jailor.
Bedford, Sept. 21st, 1802.
N.B. Positive proof will be required, from any person claiming said negro, that he is a slave, before he will be delivered up.
Watkins' claim of being a free man who was kidnapped must have been believable to Jailer Sides, whose advertisement noted that "positive proof" would be required before Sides would be given up. This is a statement very rarely seen in jailer ads holding suspected escaped slaves. If Sides held to the four-week deadline for any slaveholder to claim Watkins, only six more days remained before the man would be released.
