Enslavement in Bucks County, Pennsylvania

Dates of birth for those enslaved, unless specified in the original documents, have been calculated by subtracting their given age from the date of the record. Very often, their ages as reported in the original records are given as approximations (such as "about 25 years of age"), which we have indicated with a lower case a following their age. The term Status refers to the relative freedom of the enslaved person. Unless specified otherwise, slaves served "for life" prior to Pennsylvania's Gradual Emancipation Act of 1780. Children born in Pennsylvania to enslaved mothers inherited their mother's enslavement status until the 1780 Gradual Abolition Act, after which they were indentured to serve until age 28, a term of enslavement that consumed much of their productive lives.

Whoever takes up said negro, and secures him in any of his Majesty's gaols, or in the workhouse in Philadelphia, so that his master may have him again, shall have the above reward, and reasonable charges paid by PATRICK COLVIN, at Trenton Ferry, or ROBERT IRWIN, in Philadelphia.

     Stanhope was apparently returned to Colvin, as he escaped one more time, in October 1774. The following ad is from November 1774:

     TWENTY SHILLINGS REWARD. RAN AWAY from the subscriber, on the 12th of this instant, (October) a negro man named STANHOPE; he was seen passing through Frankford, and is thought to be in Philadelphia; had on and with him when he went away, an old blue surtout coat, a new red duffil double-breasted jacket pinned, without buttons or strings, tow shirt and trowsers, one felt and one half worn castor hat, and a pair of good shoes with metal buckles. Whoever takes up said negro and secures him, so that his master may have him again, shall receive the above reward, and all reasonable charges, paid by ROBERT IRWIN in Philadelphia, or the subscriber at Trenton, New Jersey.       This person was registered in 1780 as "Garrett, male, 18 years old."   Notes: John Coryell owned a ferry across the Delaware River that was used by American troops during the Revolutionary War. He was a supporter of the revolution, and by removing boats from the New Jersey side in 1776, was able to help protect the forces of George Washington that had retreated into Pennsylvania. Coryell advertised in 1775 to find the possible owner of an African American man from Virginia who was claiming that he was free. It is possible that Coryell employed, or was planning to employ this man.
