Mifflin County Slaveholders in the 1790 Census

Notes

The data below is drawn from the "1790 Census of Mifflin County, Pennsylvania," posted on Rootsweb. The spelling of names has been preserved from the original records. Names of slaveholders have been alphabetized by surname for reference. The census of 1790 divided Mifflin County into two parts: "That portion south of the River Juniata," and "Remainder of County."

Census takers recorded only names for the head of a household. All other persons were totaled into one of the following categories:

Free white males of 16 years and upward, including heads of families
Free white males under 16 years
Free white females, including heads of families
All other free persons
Slaves

Of the categories noted above, the data below shows only the numbers of "other free persons" and slaves with the heads of households. The names, ages and sex of the enslaved Blacks and of the "other free persons" were not recorded in this enumeration. Other free persons could include free African Americans, indentured servants of any race, Native Americans, any other non-white person. Those figures are included here because the category may include the Black "term slaves," or those enslaved individuals born to enslaved mothers after March 1, 1780 and held in bondage for 28 years.
