Slave Notes:  Correspondence from Jan Slater notes: the slave "Tim, owned by David Shephard, in Washington County, Pennsylvania is probably "Tymothy" in Shephard's (spelled Shepherd) will in Ohio County VA (later West Virginia).  The will abstract, dated January 20, 1795, notes that Shepherd "dwells in the forks of Wheeling Creek," and  lists two slaves, a Negro man named Tymothy and a Mullato girl named Nance.  Nance does not appear in the slave registrations for Shephard in Washington County, Pennsylvania.
Numerous slaveholders in this border area moved south to avoid the gradual emancipation laws passed in Pennsylvania, and Shephard's move may have been one such example.   The slave Nance was probably born in, or acquired after his move to Virginia, since she was not registered by him in Pennsylvania.
