- Slaveholder Name: Meek, Joshua
City or Township: Robinson Township
County: Washington
Occupation:
Notes: Researcher Daniel A. Meeks of Fort Wayne, Indiana, has done extensive research to sort out the identity of two men in Washington County with similar names, Joshua Meek and Joshua Meeks. To confuse the issue, both men registered three enslaved people each, with similar names. Mr. Meeks writes:
"Joshua Meek and Joshua Meeks were two different individuals
that lived in the same general area in 1782-1783.
I have done extensive research on this family line.
I live in Fort Wayne, Indiana and from information obtained at the Allen
County
Library I have proven the existence of my GGGG-GF, Joshua Meeks. On
Oct. 3, 1782 his
slaves names were David, age 60, George, age 40 and Anas, age 30.
A Joshua Meek (who I believe to be my Joshua Meeks' uncle) had slaves
named
Dave, Grigg, and Ann. The tax list of 1783 Robinson Twp., Washington County,
records
Joshua's property as 600 acres, 6 horses, 2 cows, 12 sheep, 3 slaves,
value 420 Pounds.
He registered his slaves on 19 Dec 1782. They were Dave, age 45, Grigg,
age 30, and Ann, age 26. Years ago, I thought this information was close enough to believe that
it may
have been the same person. After spending several years sorting them
out, I was able to locate two separate individuals and identify my direct line."
We are grateful to Mr. Meeks for sharing this information and helping us to keep this slave data accurate.
