Text on memorandum of sale: "Dorcas to Ephraim Douglass 13.15.0." Douglass also purchased Joe (above) and Allice (above) at the same sale. George Washington acquired Dorcas from Gilbert Simpson, manager of the Washington's Bottom plantation and his partner in the mill venture, for £30.
It appears that Washington was led to believe by Simpson that Dorcas was a slave for life, but it was revealed after the October 5, 1786 sale to Ephraim Douglass that she was actually a term slave, bound for 28 years and not for life. This created a problem for Thomas Freeman, Washington's agent in Fayette County, as he explained in a letter to Washington:
In the Sale of the Negroes there is one Named Dorcas that you Receivd of Mr Simpson as a Slave proves to be free at the Age of Twenty Eight Years the Records from Westmoreland we had & I took the Supreme Judge McKeans Opinion on the matter & he declares her free, so that you must have recourse to Mr Simpson as you Settled with him at the rate of Thirty Pounds and now after keeping her Two Years she Sold at Thirteen Pounds fifteen shillings as ⅌ acct.
A check of Westmoreland County Slave Registrations shows that Gilbert Simpson registered fourteen enslaved people with the county clerk on November 25, 1782, per Pennsylvania law. The last and youngest registered was "Darcus," a one-year-old female at the time of registration.

Also the mother of twins Tom and Charity, both born circa September 1784 and sold to Samuel Burns at the Washington Bottom public sale. Nancy was purchased by James Hammond from George Washington at the liquidation of Washington's stock at his mill in Fayette County. Nance is one of the enslaved people sent from Mount Vernon in 1773 to work on the grist mill and settlement called Washington's Bottom, located near present day Perryopolis in Fayette County and under the management of Washington's business associate Gilbert Simpson. The operation, including some enslaved workers, was advertised for sale by Washington in the summer of 1784 when his business partnership with Simpson broke up. The enslaved persons remaining at the mill were to be returned to Mount Vernon, but when they refused to be returned, were sold to local residents in the fall of 1786.
Hammond purchased Nance and an unnamed "young child" at the public sale of George Washington's "stock" of the gristmill and plantation on the Youghiogheny River held in October 1786. The bill of sale produced by Washington's agent, Thomas Freeman, and mailed to Washington is dated 05 October 1786, and shows Hammond paid £80.5.0 for Nance and her infant, with Ephraim Douglass providing surety.

This Return had been made on the 12th of August in all things perfect, except that the name of the Child had been omitted; at that time it was recorded with a blank for that name.
Note that the original registration made by Hutton was faulty in that it did not include the enslaved child's name. Hutton filed an amended return along with swearing an oath before Judge Cook a month later in order to make the registration legal.
