- Slaveholder Name: Simpson, Gilbert
Notes: Between 1772 and 1786, Gilbert Simpson was the business partner of George Washington, managing Washington's mill and plantation, called Washington's Bottom, in Fayette County. All or most of the enslaved people below, all registered in November 1782, were probably living and working on Washington's mill and plantation, which was located near present day Perryopolis. The man Orson is documented as Simpson's enslaved man, as registered. However some or all of the others may actually be people enslaved by George Washington and only under Gilbert Simpson's management at the mill. Dudley (Duffy) and Simon match almost exactly two of the enslaved people sold by Washington to local residents when he closed the operation in October 1786. The child Darcus (Dorcas) is positively identified in that same sale. Three other enslaved people sold off by George Washington are Joe, Allice and Lydia. Among the people registered by Simpson below are Joseph, Alle and Lydia, but not enough additional information is available at this time to establish a match.

Notes: Gilbert Simpson wrote to George Washington in October 1773 asking "pray let me have Two Negros of the kind I wrot To you For." In November Washington recorded in his ledger the names of two additional enslaved workers sent to Gilbert, named Duffy and Simon. In the ledger, the two, recorded as "Negro boys" are appraised at £50 and £40 respectively. It is almost certain this person is the "Negro boy" Duffy, owned by George Washington and sent in 1773 from Mount Vernon to the Pennsylvania frontier. If so, then Gilbert Simpson is not legally his owner.

Notes: Enslavement status is here determined by the reported age at registration. Simpson transferred ownership of Dorcas to his partner in the Washington's Bottom plantation, George Washington, in the year 1784 for the agreed upon value of £30 as part of the settlement demanded by Washington to end their partnership. In October of 1786, when Washington had his western agent Thomas Freeman sell his enslaved people at the plantation, Dorcas, at age 5, was sold to Ephraim Douglass, along with two other enslaved adults, Joe and Allice.
The sale of Dorcas created a problem for Thomas Freeman, Washington's agent in Fayette County, as he explained in a letter to Washington:
In the Sale of the Negroes there is one Named Dorcas that you Receivd of Mr Simpson as a Slave proves to be free at the Age of Twenty Eight Years the Records from Westmoreland we had & I took the Supreme Judge McKeans Opinion on the matter & he declares her free, so that you must have recourse to Mr Simpson as you Settled with him at the rate of Thirty Pounds and now after keeping her Two Years she Sold at Thirteen Pounds fifteen shillings as ⅌ acct.
