Kent County, Delaware Colony Index Page

The counties of New Castle, Kent and Sussex in modern day Delaware became part of the Province of Pennsylvania when William Penn leased them from James, the Duke of York. Known as the Lower Counties on the Delaware, the three counties became semi-autonomous when they obtained a separate legislature in 1701, but they remained under the governorship of Pennsylvania until declaring independence from Great Britan in 1776.
