Who's Who in Pennsylvania's Underground Railroad

The following listings document the African American community in Wilkes-Barre in 1850.  Census enumerators counted 60 "Colored Males" and 34 "Colored Females" in the Borough of Wilkes-Barre, in 1850.  Most were living at home with their families, although a large number were enumerated as employees living in the household of their employer.  The largest African American household in Wilkes-Barre was that of James Phenix, which held 17 individuals.

This page also lists the African American residents of Wilkes-Barre Township.  The township extended south from the borough boundaries, and Underground Railroad agents would have passed through it on their journey from Pottsville to Wilkes-Barre. Stories from the period that mention UGRR activity in Wilkes-Barre are sometimes vague and may be in reference to the township of the same name.  Census enumerators counted 48 "Black Males," 52 "Black Females," 3 "Mixed Males," and 9 "Mixed Females," for a total of 112 in the township's "Colored population."  Thirty-nine of these individuals were clustered next to or near each other in the township.
