Notes Diarist Thomas P. Cope, of Philadelphia, writes of the 1800 conviction in Carlisle of two brothers named McAllister "the youngest of whom is upwards of 60," for the murder of a Negro man, who was a slave of one of them. TWENTY DOLLARS REWARD.
RAN AWAY about the middle of June last, from the subscriber near Carlisle, in the state of Pennsylvania, a Negro man named BEN, about 26 years of age, five feet eleven inches high, strong made, not very black; had on a short brown cloth jacket, the back parts light coloured, tow shirt and trowsers, an old pair of shoes, a hunting cap bound with yellow tape, a striped silk handkerchief; he also took with him a remarkable large knife; one of his fore fingers is very small.
He was formerly the property of a certain Hayes, alias Haset or Haslet, about twelve miles from Dover, in Kent county Delaware, to which place it is supposed he is gone. Whoever secures said Negro so that his master may have him again, shall have the above reward and reasonable charges, from ANDREW M'CALISTER.

Notes William McAllister lived in Mifflin County. He was visiting his brother John of Tyrone Township at the time of the death of his slave Cesar. Both men were tried in Cumberland County at the Court of Oyer and Terminer, September Session, 1800, President Judge John Joseph Henry presiding. Testimony at the trial described in detail how Caesar was severely beaten. John and William McAllister were both found guilty and sentenced to five years each in the penitentiary

Cumberland County court records have the following account of the beating: "Examination of John McAllister of Tyrone Twp.: That in the forenoon of April 14, his brother William McAllister of Mifflin Co. discovered that someone had cut the strap of his saddle bags and had taken 7 French crowns & $5. He accuses Negro Cesar, his property, who denied it. He took him to an apple mill, fastened a rope about the negro's neck & put him over the sweep of the mill. Then he stripped off his clothes and whipped him and told him to give back the money. . .William McAllister brought the negro back to the house and went to Landisburg. When he came back at dark the negro was dead, and that he had not intended to take his life, but only to get a confession. (April 21)"
Note: this case received newspaper coverage at least as far as Philadelphia, as Philadelphia merchant Thomas Cope commented about it in his diary. (Harrison)

RAN AWAY from the subscriber, living near Shippensburgh, in the county of Cumberland, on Saturday evening the 7th instant, a negro man, named LEVI, about thirty-five years of age, five feet ten or eleven inches high, a miller by trade, and inclines to play on the fiddle. Had on and took away with him, one grey broadcloth coat with pewter or lead buttons, one scarlet broadcloth jacket, one clouded or calico do. three pair of trowsers, clouded nankeen, one striped red, and one country tow linnen, one common furr hat, two fine linen shirts, one of them ruffled at the bosom, one muslin shirt, and one pair of calf-skin shoes. He is of a pleasant countenance, has a scar above one of his eyes, and is supposed to have a pass. Whoever takes up the said negro man, and secures him in any jail in the United States, shall have the above reward, and all reasonable charges if brought home. JOHN M'CUNE.

He also decoyed away a large brindled dog, with his tail and ears cut. The above reward, and reasonable charges will be paid, for securing or bringing home said runaway to the subscriber.

Following that he was commander of a regiment of the Flying Camp and fought in New York until November 1776, when taken prisoner by the British upon the fall of Fort Washington on Manhattan Island. He was exchanged in 1777.

Notes: John Montgomery purchased Juba, a "Negro boy," aged about 9 years, from William Smith on September 27, 1777. Montgomery later sold Juba, age 18, to Joseph Kreps on May 2, 1785. Kreps later obtained a certificate of registration from Cumberland County clerk John Agnew, stating "on the 23rd day of October, 1780, entered office Juba, a Negro slave then supposed to be aged about 13 years in due time agreeable to the law for abolition of slavery.” The certificate, dated November 16, 1789, was in preparation for the sale of Juba, aged about 22 years, to Robert Coleman of Lancaster County, on January 1, 1790.
