Memorial Day 2006
at Midland Cemetery

Featuring photos by Sgt. Byron Childress, 3rd Reg. USCT

On May 27 The Friends of Midland Cemetery celebrated Memorial Day 2006 with speeches, synchronized stepping routines, exhibits of historical materials and demonstrations from United States Colored Troops reenactors.  Our theme, this year, was Memorial Day Observances, past and present, and our Master of Ceremonies was Mr. Sylvester Slade, of Philadelphia.  Please see our 2006 event program for some exclusive photographs, mementoes and descriptions of past celebrations.

We were privileged to have several wonderful speakers who spoke of the solemnity and importance of the day, as well as paying tribute to those who served and those who continue to serve in defense of this country.  Inspiring and appropriate remarks were delivered by MC Sylvester Slade, Bob Spandler, representing Swatara Township, George Hartwick, Dauphin County Commissioner, Jessica Malone of Harrisburg East Rotary Club, Tom Acri, Mayor of Steelton, Pennsylvania State Senator Jeffrey Piccola, Barbara Barksdale, president of Friends of Midland, and our keynote speaker, Sgt. Major Joseph H. Lee, of the 3rd United States Colored Troops.

Barbara Barksdale also introduced Patrick Erb, a local student and Boy Scout, who is building a split-rail fence around portions of the Midland Cemetery as an Eagle Scout project.  (Click here for photographs of Erb and the work crew that built the fence)

Mr. James Turner, of Beulah Baptist Church, sang several musical selections, the Vision Quest Buffalo Soldiers Drill Team presented a rousing stepping routine, and the soldiers of the 3rd United States Colored Troops, of Philadelphia, raised the nation's colors on our new flagpole and fired a rifle salute to conclude the program.

Following the ceremony, participants and guests enjoyed an outdoor picnic in a shaded area of the cemetery, wrapping up a very enjoyable and memorable day.
