Notes: Barney made several escaped from Buyers, the first on April 16, 1786. Text of escape advertisement:
      Eight Dollars Reward.
RAN away from the subscriber, living in Salsbury township, Lancaster county, on the 16th instant, a molatto man, named BARNEY, between eighteen and nineteen years of age; five feet nine or ten inches high; has a large scar over his left eye; and shews his teeth much when he laughs; had on, and carried with him, a wine stone colored coat, a buck-skin jacket, one pair of white woollen trowsers, and one pair of striped cotton ditto, one pair of blue and white woollen stockings, an old felt hat, one new tow shirt, one yellow silk handkerchief, one red and white ditto, one pair of coarse leather shoes, tied with thongs.
Any person apprehending and securing said Runaway, so that his master may have him again, shall receive the above reward from
      ROBERT BUYERS.
      April 18th, 1786.
Buyers recovered Barney, but the enslaved man escaped again six years later on June 12, 1792. Buyers waited more than a month before advertiseing for him, suggesting that he believed he could easily recover Barney locally on his own, or that Barney would return on his own, possible assumptions based on his experience with Barney's first escape attempt.
      "FIVE POUNDS Reward.
RAN away from the subscriber, living in Salisbury township, Lancaster county, on the 12th of June last, a Mulatto slave, named BARNEY, about twenty-six years of age, five feet ten or eleven inches high, of a very strong make, has a large scar over his right eye, and shews his teeth much when he laughs, he can read and write, he understands all kinds of farmer business, and can play the fiddle; had on, and took with him, a fustian coat and jacket, a striped ditto, a pair of blue and white striped cotton trowsers, a pair of tow ditto, a pair of white cotton stockings, calf-skin pumps, with large plated buckles, a fine shirt, a red silk handkerchief, and a wool hat almost new; he is an artful fellow, and perhaps has a pass; it is likely he will change his name and his clothes, and try to pass for a freeman. Any person apprehending and securing said runaway, so that his master may have him again, shall receive the above reward, and, if brought home, reasonable charges, paid by ROBERT BUYERS.
N.B. All masters of vessels, and others are forbid to harbour or carry him off, at their peril.
      July 23, 1792."
