Lancaster Goal, December the 8th, 1769.
WAS committed to my custody, a Negroe man, who called himself Joseph Damney, and says he belongs to Joseph Marks, of Philadelphia; said Negroe is about 5 feet 3 or 4 inches high, and about 34 or 35 years of age; had on, when committed, a blue jacket, an old felt hat, a pair of old tow trowsers, and good shoes; he is a chunky built fellow, I think, according to an advertisement in the news-paper, that his name is Tom Tony, and that he belongs to Joseph Watkins, junior, of Philadelphia. His master, if any he has, is therefore desired to come, or send, and pay his fees, otherwise he will be sold out, in 5 weeks from the date hereof, by

Eberly suspected this man was Tom Tony, who had escaped from Joseph Watkins, Jr., in Philadelphia, but his description differs significantly from Watkins' description of Tom Tony, specifically in the physical description. Tom Tony was described as "tall and slender," whereas this man is short and "chunky built." The clothing also differs in every respect, although clothing can be changed.

- Slaveholder Name: Fahnestock, Samuel
City or Township: Lancaster Borough
County: Lancaster (relocated from York County to Lancaster either 1799 or 1800)
Occupation: Physician (office on West King Street), inventor, druggist
Notes: Dr. Samuel Fahnestock was an early promoter of the small pox vaccine and advertised its availability from his office. As a physician, he specialized in the study and treatment of fevers. In 1819 he invented and patented his "Mineral Water Apparatus," which was essentially a soda fountain, to dispense carbonated water into a glass from a pressurized barrel underneath the counter. He saw it as a remedy for stomach ailments and to reduce vomiting, as well as a way to ease high body temperatures.
- Enslaved Person's Name: Priscilla
Sex: Female
Age: "about 28 years of age"
Date of Birth: circa 1771
Status: Runaway
Description: "Negro Woman"
Notes: Formerly owned by John Edie in York Borough. Text of runaway ad:
Ten Dollars Reward. RANAWAY on the night of Tuesday the 28th inst. A NEGRO WOMAN, named PRISCILLA, about 28 years of age, middling tall, of a handsome countenance, speaks plain English and has no toes on her right foot, in consequence of which she limps a little in walking. She was formerly the property of John Edie of Yorktown, Has a Husband named CLEM. Took with her a large quantity of clothing, which I cannot describe, except a white felt Hat with green underneath. The above reward will be paid to any person who will secure the said Negro so that I may get her again, with reasonable charges if brought home. SAMUEL FAHNESTOCK.
June 1.
Priscilla's escape in late May 1799 is right around the time that Fahnestock relocated his practice from York to Lancaster. That this ad appears only in a Lancaster County newspaper suggests he had already begun establishing himeslf in that city by this time. The impending relocation of slaveholders is a factor found in other runaway slave advertisements. Priscilla, who as noted "has a husband named Clem" and was formerly ensalved by John Edie in York, was probably motivated to escape by the fear of separation from her husband and possibly other family members.

- Enslaved Person's Name: Perryway
Sex: Male
Age: "between 19 and 20 years of age"

Description: "Negro man"
Notes: Perryway escaped from Fahnestock on January 23, 1812. Text of runaway ad:
30 DOLLARS REWARD.
RAN away from the subscriber, on Thursday the 23d instant a negro man named
PERRYWAY,
About 5 feet 6 inches high, between 19 and 20 years of age, stout built, round faced, has a scar on his under lip, also a scar or bite on his right arm, below his elbow -- he speaks tolerably good English and a little German. He plays on the violin and it is supposed he has taken a violin with him. Had on and took with him a large lion skin coat, with a large cape bound with oris, corduroy round-about and trowsers, a yellow jacket, with black zigzag stripes, two linen shirts, a new silk handkerchief with white and red stripes, and a half worn castor hat. It is highly probable he has changed his clothing, in order to prevent his being apprehended.
Whoever secures the above negro, so that his master may get him again, shall have the above reward, and all reasonable charges paid if brought home.
SAMUEL FAHNESTOCK.
Lancaster, February 1, 1812.
Perryway is described as leaving wearing a "lion-skin coat" as well as a "yellow jacket, with black zigzag stripes." Both are highly distinctive items of clothing, the lion skin coat with a large cape being quite ostentatious on its own. It is also highly unusual. Numerous descriptions of fugitive slave escapes include mentions of animal skin and fur garments, but are typically made of bear, deer (buckskin) and beaver, or other animals commonly found in North America. A lion skin garment was and still is a rarity. Tradition reserves their use for persons of wealth and high social status. How, and why, Perryway came to be wearing such a garment is an intriguing question.

Whoever takes up said Negroe fellow and secures him in any goal, so as his master may have him again, shall have the above reward, and reasonable charges, paid by

Slave Notes: Lancaster attorney Jasper Yeates wrote to his brother-in-law Edward Burd, of Philadelphia, concerning York, an enslaved man from the Grubb estate. Apparently Burd was considering acquiring York, who would have been about twenty years old, at the time:
(March 1786) With respect to the Negro York, I think he would by no means answer your purpose at present. He has been with me about a fort night and all he has done during that period would not amount to 4 hour's work. He has cleaned the knives and a few pairs of end irons [sic] and whenever he has done it, he has complained that his back has been so weak that he could not sleep. He spits much and appears to be rheumatic. My regard for the children could only induce him to be continued in my family. He is very lousy and Gen. Hand thinks lazy. He spends 13 hours out of the 14 in the chimney corner with his great coat and hat on. This is an exact report on him. You and Betsy will judge for yourselves.
I think the warm weather will be a great service to him. He was once a most excellent, lively boy, with the best disposition, but I fear he has been greatly injured of late both in health and in industry. If the former mends, he will still be a good slave. Gen. Hand thinks he is not a consumptive.

Notes: Escaped from Grubb's Mount Hope Furnace, probably in the summer of 1785, based on the ad. Text of runaway advertisement placed by Grubb in August:
Four Dollars Reward.
RAN AWAY from the subscriber at Mount Hope Furnace, Lancaster county, a Negro FELLOW, named Natt, about 24 or 25 years old, 5 feet 6 inches high, has a large high nose, rather a yellow complexion for a negro, and has a remarkable waddle in his walk, which makes him appear as if he had been wounded in the hip. The fellow has a tolerable pleasing voice, and is fond of singing. Said Negro was bred up by, and purchased (about 4 years since) from Mr. Wharton, merchant, in Philadelphia, with whom the negro's mother now lives. He is supposed to be gone to Philadelphia, to go on board of some outward bound vessel. Whoever apprehends said Negro, and secures him in any gaol, so that I may have him again, shall have the above reward, or Eight Dollars if brought home, to be paid by me PETER GRUBB, senior.
